    Quaoar is the largest solar system object discovered since Pluto and Charon, and it reinforces the idea that there might be other large KBOs that are still undiscovered. The two tails are not distinct in this image; you are seeing the gas tail for the most part. Comets, for example, are often discovered first by non-professional astronomers. Its dust counter recorded peaks in particle density in the middle of the sheets that were a thousand times higher than the density of particles between these peaks.

    Over the past two nights perhaps 1 or 2 of my 34 detections have come from this shower. But Encke’s Comet repeatedly arrived about 2.5 hours too soon. A spherical region outside the orbit of Pluto thought to be the source for long-period comets with orbits of longer than 200 years. But going overboard with the reportage threatens to discredit a genuinely serious subject, especially when we are living in such a climate of fear.

    This is known as the Perseid Meteor Shower and meteors can be seen as they skip across earth's atmosphere. With a size twice that of Manhattan island, the asteroid was first discovered by Gustav Witt on August 13, 1898. Sounds like they threw in the period to make it sound more dramatic. This difference has had astronomer scratching their heads.     The natural human tendency is to believe that this event was a rare fluke, a thing of the past, and that Earth is now largely safe from such global disasters. Percival Lowell (1855-1916) was an American astronomer who founded the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Arizona in 1894.
